USR vs UPA_USR?

What functionality uses USR and which uses UPA_USR? I'm aware that UPA_USR is pretty much a denormalized sub-set version of USR and they the data should be the same. I'm just interested in what functionality actually uses UPA_USR. I could probably crank up the sql logging and poke around, but figured I'd ask the experts here.
