using tags in backup/restore scripts

479144Sep 28 2006 — edited Aug 20 2009
This is a general question about the functional use in the backup and restore statements.

What is the purpose of specifying a tag on the backup and on the restore? The dba can say backup tag=woohoo database; Then they can turn around and say restore database from tag=woohoo, recover database tag=woohoo. Does this really mean anything? What is rman/oracle behavior based upon a tag?

I know tags can be used to "Name" a backup or group backups logically together. So I can tag a backup and then query in RMAN and know that every backup with tag MONDAY, was done Monday. But this is a rather cosmetic use, does it actually affect the restore/recover process when you specify a tag?

So if you had

Restore database from tag=woohoo;

Recover database from tag=woohoo; **What??????does this mean????????
