Using SID instead of SERVICE_NAME IN ORACLE 12c

Can I use SID instead of the SERVICE_NAME in TNSNAMES.ORA with Oracle 12c (with or without pluggable database)? It does not look like I can use SID after I created one PDB - I tried and could not make this working. Can I still use SID instead of the SERVICE_NAME after creating database container with no pluggable databases?
