Using ORION to test SAN Solution

791270Sep 17 2010 — edited Sep 17 2010
Hey Everyone,
We're working to implement a vendor solution which includes oracle11g in the install. However since they are still in development, I'm trying to get our ducks in a row so that as soon as we receive engineering code we'll be able to hit the ground running.

I'm trying to provision to contain not just all of the oracle voting/cluster info, but also the flash recovery area, and the ASM disks. Their engineers still have not determined whether we should use RAW devices (now deprecated in most linux distros), or block level filesystem access (supported by oracle as of 11g). I honestly don't care which they choose, I'm just trying to make sure that our IOPs match what is necessary for the db.

To test this, I was planning to use ORION. I know this isn't officially supported, however it seems to run ok when I test it against a vanilla formatted disk (ext3). I also tried with the same disk as a raw device and it worked there as well. The numbers were slightly lower with the formatted disk, as would be expected. Now I know that it's not supported, but has anyone else seen this behavior? It's not super important considering this will be on a naked SAN with no data, but I'd love to know that I have the option no matter which option the vendor goes with.
