Using Apex in development teams

My company is considering introducing Apex as a development tool.

In previous companies I've used technologies such as MS Sourcesafe to maintain source code control and code rollout/backup.

Does Apex offer anything similar in the way of source code control which would be suitable for use in a small to medium size development team?
