Users in apex workspace expired

I created an appllication with users created in the apex workspace. These users log into an application using the username/password combo that has been created in the workspace. However, after a few weeks the user accounts expire and have the hour glass next to them. Tis means they can no longer log into the application.

Can you explain why this happens and how to fix this problem?
