Users can not login.

I have a system running solaris 10 10/08. The system used to allow users to login via ssh or through a GUI. Now I can do neither. The system allows me to boot into single user mode but when i attempt to change any passwords I receive a permission denied. I have been searching the internet but have yet to find any solution to this issue. Has anybody else come across anything like this?

When I attempt to login in a non single user environment with a user name and password that I know works I immediately told invalid password and required to provide something new. If I use a valid user name and incorrect credentials the system takes a few seconds and then tells me invalid password.

When I select the command line login option i see

pam_winbind(login): Internal module error (retval = 1); user='root')
pam_winbind_reqest: write to socket failed

hostname login: login account failure: Error in underlying service module

I am unsure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
