Useless documentation. Community help needed w/ upgrade

I'm attempting to upgrade the standalone version of bpel process manager w/ jdeveloper to the 10.1.3.4.0 from the downloaded 10.1.3.1.0. Unfortunately it's a quagmire as the instructions don't mention all kinds of necessary information. I'm constantly having to go on google and search for default passwords and names and what the databases bpel installs to oracle lite are and finding things out like i need to use msql instead of sqlplus none of which is covered anywhere in the instructions.

I downloaded a near 800 mb patch set because it claims the bpel information is included but when i run the installer it says my product is up to date. When I search for bpel in the massive install guide I see it tells me to run a sql script. After visiting multiple google sites to find out the connect screen and the username/password/sid for the database bpel installed (not in the instructions tyvm) I get in and run the script and it completes fine. I reboot the computer since I can't figure out how to restart or shut down the instance (shutdown doesn't work) and I attempt to run the bat file to start bpel again so I can finally go back and test the creditreportingservice app and it won't start properly.

I'm sure i did something in the upgrade wrong but I'm at a loss to figure out what as these instructions are so terrible. The ironic thing is I used to write documentation for lockheed on how to take oracles patch releases for OAS/Oracle and convert them into instructions that normal people could follow (for customers etc) and I can't figure this bpel stuff out at all. At least with the OAS/ODB stuff you know the instance/user names etc. Apparently oracle decided that wasn't necessary for bpel and you're just supposed to randomly guess or google for it.

I would really appreciate some help as to the proper process for upgrading the default bpel install to the current version so that I can work through the examples.

Thank you for your time -- I wish Oracle had done their job so I wouldn't have had to take it up.
