Use of SID instead of SERVICE_NAME in Oracle Database 12c Enterprise Edition Release 12.1.0.2.0

Hi, Can I use SID instead of the SERVICE_NAME in TNSNAMES.ORA with Oracle 12c (with or without pluggable database)? It does not look like I can use SID after I created one PDB - I tried and could not make this working. Can I still use SID instead of the SERVICE_NAME after creating database container with no pluggable databases? Thanks for your help.
