Java HotSpot Virtual Machine

Hi JAVA GURUS,

I am in a mess. Help me out. I am into development of a
Platform Independent Installer in Java.

I have completed it for Windows.

But now I have to do it for LINUX, UNIX systems. I have to make
entry of the details of the Software that I am installing into
RPM DATABASE. First of all, is it really needed.

If yes, then how to do it using Java?

Also, is RPM DATABASE an equivalent of WINDOWS REGISTRY?

If not then where do a LINUX or UNIX system stores the details of a
software installed on it?

A QUICK and COMPLETE reply in this regard will be highly appreciated
