update global index and undo tablespace

573141Oct 22 2010 — edited Oct 25 2010
hi,

table maintenance operations like drop partition on partitioned tables invalidate (mark unusable) global indexes.
there are 2 option to bring back the unusable index to the usable state.

1.index rebuild
2. use update global index clause with partition maintenance operation.

what i understand is index rebuild uses spaces tablespace on which is created and may spill into temp tablespace for sorting.

i am not able to understand the internal changes happen during "update global index",

1) what is the meaning updating an "unusable" index to bring it back to "valid" state.

2) does "update global index" use undo tablespace?

because with , alter <table_name> drop partition <partition_name> update global index

we are runnning into "ORA-01555 Snapshot Too Old" error. the partition table has millions of rows with couple of global indexes

thanks,
charles
