unsupported class version error

I'm trying to run the "Hello World" example in the "Integrating Native Code Into Java" tutorial. When I try to run the program, this is the error message I get:
java Main
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Main (Unsupported major.minor version 50.0)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass0(Native Method)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:539)

Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I'm on a SUSE Linux box.
thanks
David
