Unexpected connection is closed

We have a webapp that connects to a database using JDBC. When it scrolls through a recordset it will occasionally get a connection is closed error. The JSP code has been the same for four months while this error only started to show up a few weeks back. What could cause a JDBC connection to be closed? Has anyone seen this error before in such a fashion?
