Berkeley DB Family

We had the error below just start pooping up recently on our running databases when we run db_checkpoint. It can be resolved by closing the environment and recovering manually, but keeps coming back. It doesn't seem to affect the running db, although the updates to the db aren't synced to the disk when forced (as errors indicate).

Any idea what this error means? i'm nervous that maybe we have a bad set of disk, or maybe some other long term problem. Luckily it's only affected demo databases but everyone has the same code base and is on the same machine so I want to lick this before it spreads. Also, any idea which file or directory it's looking for?
