Unable to connect to SQL Server 6.5

I have installed Oracle SQL Developer 1.2 and added in Third-Party JDBC driver (jtds-1.2.1.jar)

When I try to connect to SQL Server 6.5 database, I get the following error;

I/O Error: Stream 0 attempting to read when no request has been sent.

I have tested connecting via ODBC from same client to server which works fine. I have also tested connecting to a Oracle database too with no problems.

Has anyone successfully connected to SQL Server using this tool? or can think what the issue might be here.
