Unable to connect in Mac OS X 10.4 to database

I have installed SQL Developer 1.2.1 build 32.13 on my mac os x 10.4.

But when I am connected to the network with the VPN connection (secure client VPN-1) I cannot connect with SQL Developer to the database in the company network.

It fails with the message

Status: -lo exception: The network adapter could not establish the connection

With my X11 command line I can ping the machine with the database and with telnet I can connect to the port.

Why cant sql developer connect to the port when X11 can using telnet ?
