Unable to access jarfile

Hi,
I've installed Saxon and JRE on winnt:
java -version

java -version

java version "1.4.2_08"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_08-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_08-b03, mixed mode)

Exit code: 0

and have set the system's environment variable classpath to:
CLASSPATH C:\Programme\Saxon\saxon8.jar

Now, if I start the application without the full path, I get
java -jar saxon8.jar

java -jar saxon8.jar

Unable to access jarfile saxon8.jar

Exit code: 1

But with the fully qualified jar file, it works fine, e.g.:
java -jar C:\Programme\Saxon\saxon8.jar

java -jar C:\Programme\Saxon\saxon8.jar

No source file name
Saxon 8.4 from Saxonica
... some more output ...

Exit code: 2

What did I miss?
