UltraSparc III 1200 Cu fails to enter in power save state (Blade 1000/2000)

807557Nov 4 2007
Hi all,

I have a Blade 2000 and I am testing two processor alternatively:
1 x 900MHz US III (no Cu)
1 x 12000MHz US III Cu

/etc/power.conf looks as follows:
---
autopm enable
cpupm enable
system-threshold 5m
cpu-threshold 2m
loadaverage 0.20
----

With the first processor installed (900 MHz) I observe the following (using a Watt meter):
Immediately after system startup: 200 Watts
3 minutes after startup with system idle and no users logged in: 160 Watts
5 minutes after startup still idle: 115 Watts

With the second (1200MHz Cu) processor installed in place of the first (workstation running in both cases with only one CPU), in the same condition:
Immediately after system startup: 185 Watts
3 minutes after startup with system idle and no users logged in: 185 Watts
5 minutes after startup still idle: 185 Watts

What is bad, in the second case, is that the system enters in a low power state, I can see the power supply fans being turned off and the green light on the power button flashing, however the CPU is still draining full power. After a while the power supply overheats and starts the fans a max speed for a few seconds, and so on.

Is this an expected behaviour? Have Sun removed power management support from the UltraSparc III 1200 MHz Cu?
