Ultra 40 and SAS..question answered
807557Jun 3 2006 — edited Apr 4 2007My Sun rep was able to get hold of the right people engineers at Sun to find out if I could add Serial Attached SCSI drives to an Ultra 40, use an LSI 8408E controller and STILL use the backplane. The answer is yes! The connectors are SAS/SATA compatible. All that has to be done is make sure you get the right cable to connect the controller to the backplane and Sun was helpful enough to provide a source for that.
The high end Ultra 40 is on the way along with an LSI 8408E controller, four Maxtor Atlas II 15K SAS drives and the appropriate cable. We expect to obliterate the already impressive benchmarks that the Ultra 40 has set.
It should all be assembled and loaded the week after next.
