Types of importing Master Repositories in ODI.?

Hi Expertise,

Can anyone say me the difference between the types of importing Master Repositories we have in ODI.
method 1) file->New->Create a master repository using an existing export file

method 2) Designer pane ->icon->import->Master Repository

I have gone through the documentation, but I am not able to get the difference exactly what are the benefits and dis-advantages on using what , can anyone enlighten me on this,
