Trim function doesn`t work

Hello,

I tried to do the following

select trim(field) from table;

Some fields have only a space as value, others have leading spaces. But Oracle ignores the trim funtion.
I also tried
select rtrim(ltrim(fieldname) from....
but it doesn`t work also...
We use Oracle 9*, the field is a VARCHAR2(4000).
Any ideas?
