Trigger SAVE of non-database items

Hi all,
I have a non-database item in a block, in which i need to save the value of the item in another table.
My form just have the default "save" button at the top, where should i put the code to save the value when the user press the "save" button.
Since when i change the value of non-database item and press "save", FRM-40401: No change to save is prompt.

Please suggest. Thanks.
