Tree region VERY slow in IE

I have a page with a tree region which displays about 11000 nodes. The performance of this tree was no acceptable in 3.2 hence I switched to 4.0. The performance is much better in Firefox and Chrome but it is VERY SLOW in IE. In Firefox it takes 10 sec to load the tree, but in IE I have to wait 5 minutes for tree to load. And yes half way through I get the nasty message from the browser warning me about the script is running very slow and I should abort it.

In our organization the IE is mainly used and supported browser so this is very critical for the performance to be better. Any suggestions? ideas?
