translate to double digits

is there a way to use translate to change a single character to a mulitple character string?

for example
select translate ('ABCDEFGHI','ABCDEFGHI',123456789) from dual
gives 123456789

but what if i wanted all 26 letters?
select translate ('ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ','ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ',
                   '1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26') from dual
