to use sql profile or nott?

Hi,
I am using Oracle 10.2.0.3. Currently there are no sql profiles in my database.There are about 1300 outlines. I want to know a few things.
1.How should I decide whether I need sql profiles or not.
2.Any specific advantages/disadvantages I should keep in mind before using them?
3.Can anyone suggest me the steps to arrive at a solution to my problem?
