tnsnames.ora and/or ODBC

Hi there,

I am not a newbie and already certified on Oracle but am confused no matter what on databae connections. to connect from an Oracle DB to another Oracle DB on

I) same server, is tnsnames in enought or ODBC is a must?
II) remote server, is tnsnames in enought or ODBC is a must?

I thank you if I am sent some resource regardgin to both. can either of tnsnames AND ODBC replace eachother or they are completely separate and are need both???

Please give me as much as detail information as you can. I don't know how I got confused on this basic setting!!!

Now any additional questio from/to oracle to another db also much appreciated.
