TNS-12631 Username retrieval failed

when i try to connect to oracle instance i get this error .TNS-12631 Username retrieval failed
The m/c name where oracle DB is installed was changed but the IP remains same .My TNSNAMES.ORA entry points to ipaddress.
can anyone give me some leads on resolving this connectivity prob
