The Ultimate Solution for Installation and Runtime Issues in XE

466163Nov 11 2005 — edited Nov 22 2005
For all of those who have experienced any of the following:

* Installation problems, crashing
* Oracle Shared Realm Errors
* Webpage FTP errors
etc.

Firstly, before installing, ensure that under the Settings > Control Panel > Language and Regional Settings, the Language and Location are set to English (US) and United States respectively.

Secondly - and this is the strange one - Oracle XE has issues for users on 2000 / XP whos usernames contain a space " " character. Mine for instance was "Stuart Steedman". Oracle XE decided that this just wasn't cricket and this later caused the dreaded "Oracle Shared Realm" errors when trying to log in under SQL*Net.
Simply change your login to a single-word username - as I changed mine to "Stuart" - and voila, problem solved.

After installation, you can change your Language and Regional settings back to whatever you want.

If this works, please e-mail me at stuart.steedman at gmail.com to let me know - I'd like some confirmation that this solution works for lots of other people.

Cheers.
