The serializable class...does not declare a static final serialVersionUI

I get this warning all the time in Eclipse. Recently I have had it auto fix for me by generating a serialVersion long. But someone told me I should just have Eclipse ignore that error through setting the preferences.

Can someone tell me more about this warning and if I should disable it?
