Text changing color and underlining

I have a table with a clob column that can contain either emails in plain text, or emails with xml formatting. When I display a clob that contains an email with xml tags the text on the main page changes color from black to blue and become underlined, the same applies to any labels on the page, links or tabs. If I then display a clob that contains plain text with no xml tags the formatting on the page goes back to normal.
It would appear that the xml formatting in the clob is changing the page defaults.
Can someone suggest how to stop this from happening.
