Tape drive stuck

I tried to access a tape drive from a Sparc 450 m/c.
initially giving tar tvf /dev/rmt/0 gave me the contents but i was not able to write to the tape using tar.
Then the tape stopped working all together and mt -status gives the erro "no offline meedia available on dev/rmt/0n"
The tape is not write protected and it is now stuck in the drive.
Can anyone plz suggest a remedy.
