Tabelspace does not extend when it is autoextensible

I am using Oracle DB 10.2.0.4 on HP-UX 11.23

I have a tablespace with two datafiles. One of the datafiles is autoextensible with maxsize unlimited. what happened was the tablespace went to full 100% and caused errors in the application. How can this be when one of the data files clearly says autoextensible on, with maxsize unlimited? Thanks in advance
