tab size 2, should be 8 in IDE

Jdeveloper 11.1.1.3.0 on Linux.

Is there a doc somewhere on settings for the code editor, specifically Java conventions?

I have "tab size" set to 8 (in Preferences...Code Editor...Code Style...Java Code Conventions), but typing a tab results in 2 spaces. Is this normal? I get the spacing I want if I check "Use Tab Character", but I don't want to do that because I don't want any tab characters in my source files.
