Symbolic links to ORACLE_HOME?

Can the ORACLE_HOME be safely linked via symbolic links in unix? I've been scanning metalink and found a few caveats. It appears that you can't, but was wondering if there may be real uses for this feature out in the real world.

Else, any horror stories would be equally neat to share. I just need ammo one way or the other.
