Supervisor hierarchy not working when hire date of manager is greater then that of employee

We have an employee and a supervisor, the hire date of the supervisor is greater then that of the employee so we did a workaround by following the steps in Doc ID 2158113.1. Now the approvals for these employees is not working. Any help is appreciated.
