SUN V880 installation issues

SteveHaddleseyAug 28 2013 — edited Aug 30 2013

I have 2 V880 severs in my garage that have been sat there for over 2 years. I tried last weekend to see what state they were in and planned to install solaris 10. However I am not seeing any output from the 25 pin serial A to my laptop. I have tried with a Cisco 9pin to RJ45 console cable using Putty with no joy. I assume that the serial port on the rcs (rj45) is not configured but would like to know what to do to try this. Do i simply connect laptop to serial using cat5 cable or do i need a switch/crossover cable.

I have no knowledge on the configuration the machines ran prior to me being given them so there could be a different config now to when last run. On truning the key and pressing the power button all lights flash and no matter how long i leave it the green power light remains solid but the two amber front panel lights slowly blink. Not having ever used these in the past and given that I am not seeing any putty output I assume there is a problem somewhere. All lights inside the sever case show green. No amber warnings at all. Is this as it should be or do the slowly flashing maintenance and hot swap lights mean there is an issue. They blink every two seconds or so in sync with each other.

In not very knowledgable when it comes to thses servers so any help for a newbie would be appreciated.
