Sun dropping Netscape
807559Aug 19 2003 — edited Aug 20 2003Now that Sun has released Netscape 7.0, complete with a bug noted in the release notes (re 8-bit framebuffers) that was fixed a year ago according to the link to Netscape web site (source code for fix dated August, 2002!), and Netscape has released Netscape 7.1 at about the same time, with some bug fixes, I find out from Sun Support that Sun won't be releasing Netscape 7.1. Now, does it seem strange to anyone else that an organization (Sun) would stop with a x.0 (i.e., FIRST major rev) release of a piece of software? I like Netscape, especially 7.1 which has some bug fixes over v7.0. Do I have to discard my Sun desktop to keep using Netscape? I can use my Win2K desktop, or install Linux of some flavor, I suppose.
Oh well, Sun probably would take another year to get Netscape 7.1 out anyway. But, when a Sun rep wants to pitch a Sun desktop, I'll tell him/her : Not until Netscape 7.1 is out & supported.
And, Sun wonders why its desktop share is small?
And, NO, I don't want Mozilla, but thanks for asking.
