Stupid question: What is difference between RAC and Clusterware?

cayenneMar 20 2009 — edited Mar 22 2009
Hi all,

I'm about to start experimenting with 11G setting up RAC (for starters, will just be a one node cluster, will try to add another one later).

I'm reading through the docs...I'm on the one for clusterware installation, and it seems to state that the clusterware and RAC are two different things?

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b28263/prelinux.htm#BABJHGBE

With quotes like " UDP is the default interconnect protocol for Oracle RAC, and TCP is the interconnect protocol for Oracle Clusterware. You must use a switch for the interconnect. Oracle recommends that you use a dedicated switch. "

Can someone tell me the difference? I know it sounds stupid, but, this is confusing me, and I'm new to this.
