Startup Upgrade on already running instances

RBkrJul 28 2016 — edited Jul 28 2016

Hi folks,

I am applying patches 22617408 (windows bundle patch) and 22839627 (Oracle Java Component)  on Oracle 12.1.0.1 databases.

I applied 22617408 successfully and had no problems doing the Post Installation "datapatch -verbose"

Next I did the 22839627 patch successfully, but I am having problems with Post Install steps.

It says in step 1 to start all database instances.

Then in step 2, it has you do a "startup upgrade" which produces the error: ORA-01081: cannot start already-running ORACLE - shut it down first

Does this make sense to do a startup upgrade on an already running instance? (This is a multitenant database)

I have an SR on this, but they say this is not due to the patch. Roll it back. I guess that means don't apply the patch?

Thanks for any assistance.
