Startup nomount error

I have four instances on a UNIX server. Iwant to create a fith instance and when I connect internal and issue the command: startup nomount
I get these messages

ORA-24323: value not allowed
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

The ORACLE_SID has been set, the password file has been set, the directory structure referenced in the init file is there. I used the same template for init file as for the other fours instances and it worked fine.

Any ideas what I should be looking for?
