Standard way to show a list of images to be chosen?

I want to display a series of images, (or arbitrary HTML), to be chosen by the user.

I investigated placing images or arbitrary HTML in select lists, and it doesn't works.

This should be a common task, but I don't know how to find the information, because I don't know what type of solution is commonly implemented.

What is the standard way, in APEX 5.1, to show a list of images to be chosen by the user?
