squid proxy server

I configured OEL with squid proxy server for faster internet access.how we make sure that squid proxy retrieve our requests from cache or directly.Is there any tool
available to monitor squid for such purpose.We need squid not only for internet access, but also for file request to server such as \\192.168.0.1, like, when i
monitored squid it does not forward file request, when i typed it in internet explorer as file://10.0.0.3.It is only forwarded directly,not through proxy. how will
configure squid to forward such file request.waiting for your response
