sqlplus connect without tnsnames.ora

Hello,

I don't have anything in tnsnames.ora locally.
I don't have a local DB instance, I always connect to an instance on a server. How should I connect using sqlplus?
sqlplus username@my.server.ip:1521/MYSID
The result is ORA-12514!
