SQLPLUS connect to 10G

Hello,

I have installed the client apps (instant client, SQLPLUS) I have c:\Oracle directory and the PATH env variable points to c:\oracle on my PC WIN-XP. How do I get a connection to 10G now? I run SQLPLUS and it asks for user/pass/host string. I don't know the format for "host string"? I have not created tnsnames.ora and I don't know if that is necessary as I can't find any readme files that describe post install. I know the following:

host server: linux.com
User ID/Pass
SID: XE
