SQL Statement to check if record exists

Good Afternoon,

I thought I once saw a post that had a SQL statement that would check a table to verify if a record exists, and return true or false... It would not return any records, just a boolean value... Does such a function exist? I have searched the forums, but I can't remember what I was researching when I found this....
