sql query

hi all
i have a string 'asdf,asdfasdf,asdfasdf,asdfasdf,asdf' and my question here is to find how many times a particular character appears in the string.
Is there any inbuilt function to perform this task. we are using oracle 8i. if not can it be done in a single query.
