SQL interview problems / questions

GaillimhApr 9 2009 — edited Apr 9 2009
Hi guys,

Hope this post is in the correct forum. I'm looking for some help or advice on how to improve my problem solving skills especially during interviews for jobs that require a decent amount of sql / oracle knowledge. I've had a couple of interviews where I felt that not matter how comfortable I am with the theory the actual practical challenge of coming up with queries to answer questions is letting me down (not very good if your going for a job where sql problem solving is critical). I have a very good book on Oracle 10g that I read constantly but I don't think its helping me in interview situations. I'm very comfortable with the basics of sql, simple joins etc but once I start having to think about multiple relationships across multiple tables ~ three or more, I get a bit flustered and frustrated. Obviously the more you practice the better you get and it takes hard work.

I guess what I'm asking is are there any good resources online, books/websites that have brain teasers / sql tests so I can improve and get better. Sometimes I think its a mental block of not breaking the query into smaller parts and working from there. Is this something other inexperienced developers have felt or is it a case of your either got the skills or you aint. Theory will only get you so far. Its like I know what the problem is but I'm not sure if I can improve it.
