SQL Developer hangs if I kill a wrong running query

I am consistently facing the issue of needing to kill SQL developer session, if I stop a long running query. I used Stop Icon and Also killed the SQL worksheet session. Once I do this, I had to kill SQL Developer session also along with it.

Is there a better way to kill long running query, so that I can continue with SQL developer session?
