SQL developer hangs frequently with blank window

Almost every day SQL developer (1.5.4 and happened with earlier versions) will hang, SQL developer window will be completely blank and has to be closed via task manager. Changes made to scripts since last save are lost. It happens both in setups where SQL developer is connecting to DB via internet and in another totally different setup (my other job) to DBs which are running locally. Dread trying scrolling data in a view or running a long query (even indexing large table) because chances are SQL developer will hang. Any ideas? Oracle metalink unable to help because 'not reproducible'. Happens with clients of XP, XP64 and Vista.
