Sql Developer freezes randomly

SaraBAug 13 2010 — edited Aug 18 2010
Hi

I've been using SQL Developer extensively for the past couple of years. I've been using it on my current laptop for the past 10 months and on version 2.1.1.64 since it was released in March. I think it's a brilliant product, does everything I need and is really easy to use. In fact, this is my very first post to this forum as I've had no problems with it until two days ago.

For the past couple of days SQL Developer has started to freeze randomly. This can be every few seconds, couple of minutes or once today I managed to work for 20 minutes with out it freezing. When it does freeze its for anything between a few seconds to a few minutes. As far as I'm aware nothing has changed on my laptop recently and I've tried a number of things to try and resolve the problem. But I'm completely lost on what it could be. There's also no pattern to when it freezes, it will even freeze if I just give the program focus! And it's not using CPU or doing anything on the database that I'm connected to at the time.

I've seen a few forum threads, like 680327 which are very similar to my problem. But they all seem to be on older versions of SQL Developer. I've tried following what they've suggested anyway.

Things I've tried:
- ensured all the Completion Insight settings were unticked
- ensured there was nothing in Worksheet > default path for scripts setting
- ensured there was a valid directory in Worksheet > default path for scripts setting (yes, the same forum thread recommended that this setting was empty and that it had a valid path)
- ran SQL Developer with no other programs running
- uninstalled Java
- deleted the sqldeveloper folder and the folder in my user settings and downloaded it again (with the jdk)

I also tried installing it on my husband's pc, which worked fine using the same version of SQL Developer and the same database connection. The only difference is that I'm running Windows 7 and he's running Windows XP SP3.

It's driving me crazy!! And it couldn't have happened at a worse time for me. I really like SQL Developer, but it's completely unusable for me at present. Any ideas on how to resolve the problem?

Thanks for any help,
Sara
